Top 10 things about my hometown

Even though we’ve moved about a dozen times, it’s been hard to beat San Diego as a hometown. I’ve loved things about every city we’ve lived in but would always love to move back to San Diego. Top 10 things I love:

  1. Weather- SD weather is hard to beat, generally sunny and warm with a little humidity and an ocean breeze!
  2. Beaches – between the beach and the mountains, I’m definitely a beach person! Nothing better than an afternoon relaxing or sleeping on the beach listening to the ocean waves.
  3. Relaxed culture – I feel like SD people are very relaxed, casual, and friendly.
  4. Vegetation – I love the rolling hills, finger canyons and coast.
  5. Mexican food – close proximity to the border makes for delicious and pretty authentic Mexican food. I could eat rice and beans everyday!
  6. LDS temple – This is the first temple I saw and where we got married. I love it’s grandeur that is manifest when you come around the freeway bend.
  7. Padres – I have a lot of good memories going to baseball games with my family! I still love hearing AC/DC’s ‘Hell’s Bells’ because it was Trevor Hoffman’s entrance song.
  8. Family activities like the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Balboa Park and the Aquarium.
  9. Location – it’s close to Mexico and LA/Disneyland. I love that Spanish culture has influenced the style of homes and street names. I also love that there’s a major airport downtown, complete with an amazing view when you fly into the city.
  10. Natural beauty – I feel that SD is naturally beautiful, clean and fresh. It will always be my hometown!

Utah trip

Even though we only moved to Texas 4 months ago, it was so nice to take a trip up to Utah and see family, friends, the beautiful mountains, our old neighborhood and restaurants we loved when we lived there. Dave’s parents returned from their mission (LDS) in South America AND Soup and Loryn got married – needless to say it was an awesome weekend! The kids were great little travelers, the key to our success was new toys (Hot Wheels cars) and snacks. It also helped that our flight on the way back to TX (which departed at 8 pm, the kids’ bedtime) had TV screens. Brent fell asleep shortly after take off and Tessa stayed wide awake the whole 3 hours watching shows!

Awesome wedding at Log Haven up Millcreek Canyon. The scenery was picture perfect and the company couldn’t have been better. I love the group of guys Dave was friends with in high school and the fact that they’re all still friends.

Fiesta Friday: things to celebrate and links I love

I basically want to visit every country in the world and Iceland has been on my Top 3 list for a while. I’ve lived vicariously through other’s travels and especially Lauren and her cute family. Her photos and travel logs are amazing!

We’re in Utah right now for Dave’s parents missionary homecoming and a good friends wedding! Can’t wait to catch up with friends and family!

Brent started soccer last week! Like most kids his age, he didn’t really get the game yet but it was so fun to watch him! I hope he shares my love for the beautiful game!

Comal River tube float

On Saturday we went floating down the Comal River with our friends (no kids) and it was so fun! There are a few tubing companies near the river entry in New Braunfels (which is like an hour and a half south of Austin), we went with Chuck’s Tubes and would definitely go with them again. They bus you to the river entry and pick you up at the end of the float which took us about 2 hours.

The weather was great and the water was fairly warm. It was relaxing with beautiful scenery. The only weird thing that happened was as we passed a patch of moss and branches floating on the water THERE WAS A SNAKE! Not exaggerating it was fatter than a rattlesnake and about 2 feet long! I’d heard there could be snakes in rivers/lakes but have never lived in a place like that before! According to a google search later, it was probably a water snake with are non venomous (although poisonous water moccasins also are found in Texas!)

The following photos were taken on my phone through a waterproof cell phone pouch I bought for this trip –  which explains the vintage-ish look, ha, ha! At $8 I felt it was a steal and something I can use in the future swimming or at the splash pad with the kids.  Comal river tubing

New Zealand travel fantasy: Hunt for the Wilderpeople

hunt-for-the-wilderpeople-hunt-for-the-wilderpeopl31

We saw Hunt for the Wilderpeople last week at the Alamo Drafthouse – the movie is an adventure comedy drama and made me smile, laugh and cry! But most of all, it made me really want to visit New Zealand! New Zealand has been on my travel list for a while (I mean basically with like every other country in the world, ha, ha) and I loved the gorgeous scenery in the movie.

Here are some more amazing images I found while daydreaming about going to New Zealand.

p.s. – the director, Taika Waititi, also directed another movie I love “What We Do In The Shadows”, a horror comedy and vampire documentary. I know it sounds weird but I’d recommend it!

Motherhood Around the World series summary

One of my favorite blogs I’ve been reading for years started another segment of their series “Motherhood Around the World” where they interview American moms living abroad and discuss surprising and unique aspects of raising kids in various cultures. It’s been so fascinating to read about different parenting styles, giving birth in a country one didn’t grow up in,  and of course seeing the beautiful landscapes around the world.

In Sweden (and other countries), babies will often nap outside tucked in their strollers – that’s one huge difference than in the US! Child Protective Service would be called before anyone could think twice! 😉  Some countries like Germany have paid maternity leave up to 12 months!

Some of the countries featured that I found particularly interesting were: Iceland, Thailand, Kenya, and Mexico. While I’ve lived abroad twice (in Guatemala and Scotland), both were before we had kids and would’ve been very different experiences. We’ve always been open to moving abroad with our kids and this series has given me an interesting and real insight to what it might be like.

Check out the amazing outdoor community pool in Iceland:

Life lately: moving to Texas

The last 3 ish years since leaving the east coast we’ve been in Utah and loving our townhome we built and being close to friends and family, not to mention the gorgeous mountains. We love to travel and see new places and never closed doors to moving almost anywhere in the world. We had a few places in mind: California, Portland, Austin, DC and we’re always talking about moving back to Scotland. We visited Austin last month to visit our friends we met in Virginia and with whom we traveled to Portland last fall.

Austin is lush with rolling hills, unlike anything I’d ever pictures Texas! When we returned from our trip, Dave was contacted by an HR consulting firm in Austin. Everything has fallen into place to allow us to move our family to Texas where we hope to stay for a while. We’re currently in an Airbnb until we close on our home the end of this week (on our 10th anniversary no less!)

So excited for this new chapter in our lives and to discover a new city!

Any Austin recommendations?

Fiesta Friday

things to celebrate happy weekend links

When we lived in Virginia, our street name was Cotswolds Hill Lane – having not known what the Cotswolds were then, they’ve since been added to my list of places to travel – check them out here with Julia’s travel post, so gorgeous!

This is literally my favorite facial product right now! I’ve definitely seen the claimed results of refined pores and a clean, detoxified feeling on your skin.

I recently discovered an awesome travel blog from the beautiful Emi, who documented these amazing pregnancy photos on her trips!

Have a great weekend! XO

Austin, TX: City Spotlight

Austin Texas Travel

We made our first trip to Texas a few weeks ago and BIG  NEWS, we’re actually moving there this week!

We loved the city – the lush, rolling hills, food, atmosphere – and my husband accepted a job there soon after. Everything happened so fast as we are in the process of selling our current home in Utah where we’ve been living for the last 3 years.

When we move there, I’m sure I’ll have lots to update on this post! Here’s a few things we loved on our short trip:

Mt.Bonnell – a short walk up about 50 stairs to the highest point in Austin with a great view of the city skyline. Free admission, public trail.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – what could be better than dinner and a movie?! The service was great and they had a large variety of items to select. I had a chili burger with a side salad 🙂

Butler/Zilker Park – like the Central Park of Austin, there is so much to do right on the across Lady Bird Lake and downtown. I’m looking forward to trying kayaking or paddle boating when we move there!

To eat:

There were so many amazing places we had recommended that we didn’t have enough time to try them all! A few of my favorites:

Torchy’s Tacos – I grew up in San Diego so of course I love tacos! I was so impressed with Torchys – I especially recommend the brisket taco and queso (cheese dip for chips)

Terry Blacks – this is where I had the best brisket of my entire life, no exaggeration! The meat was so tender I didn’t even need a knife. They have self serve sides which is awesome so you can try a little of everything (which I did!)

Amy’s Ice Creams – highly rated ice cream that to me rivals Salt and Straw (Portland) – they have weekly specialty flavors or you can create your own combo. It’s similar to ColdStone but a hundred times better 🙂

Gourdoughs (donuts) – a few locations in Austin including the permanent food truck that we visited. Their donuts are pretty amazing and come with awesome toppings (fruit, icing, etc)

We’re excited to start a new adventure and see new places! If you have any Austin recommendations, please share!
